Why the DNC is Hiding its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The decision by the Democratic National Committee to withhold the public viewing of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race seems remarkable but to be expected. Averse to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body often functions closer to a communications shop than a political organization devoted to building local power for winning elections.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the DNC has continued under that legacy throughout this past year. Publishing such a report would have indicated whether party leaders are interested to promote public discourse regarding the missteps that paved the way for the former president to return to the White House. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there's nothing to glean from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

The top priority: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a justification which was presented to justify concealing the document.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report with any value would not dodge a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: The loss of millions of voters that backed the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal during the tight 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Run: The stubborn insistence by the incumbent to run again, coupled with a very late withdrawal, is seen by some as denying the party's base of a genuine choice.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the electoral effort is criticized for ceding to powerful financial backers while failing to confront the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Gaza Impact: An unwillingness to reconsider an approach on the situation in Gaza allegedly caused driving away significant blocs, particularly among youth voters, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data indicates a significant drop-off in Democratic support from voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal aligns with a longstanding habit to avoid hard truths. It recalls a dynamic in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington supported an incumbent's determination to seeking another term right up until a poor campaign event compelled an exit.

Meanwhile, large majorities of the electorate had been consistently telling pollsters of their opposition to that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Issues

An honest report would also probe questions about campaign spending, including what sums went to insider consultants as well as media firms over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal sum in a short period.

A Broader Problem

At its core, the blockage of the official autopsy is symptomatic of an allegiance toward party leaders that oversaw a disastrous presidential campaign. The implication for the party's base – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to know what party chiefs say they discovered from an analysis drawing from extensive interviews.

A party incapable to publicly examine its own failings finds it difficult to climb out of the rut that proved so helpful to the rival party.
