Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
