Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
