RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
