Earth might be under strain, but optimism persists. A novel accolade from the interdisciplinary festival Starmus seeks to encourage people to make a difference.

The medal will honor in memory of the esteemed scientist and conservationist who passed away recently. It is designed to celebrate those who advocate for life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees are slated for announcement during the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the medal's establishment. “The concept behind this medal, and Starmus being entrusted with organising it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely due to the unique bond she shared with us.”

“This medal will recognize sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and offer support to continue such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – will likely have multiple categories.

“It’s going to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established a decade past,” it was explained. Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Expressing concern on the outlook for Earth, one figure said, “Honestly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. The current political climate globally represents an assault on knowledge. So this undermines the world’s efforts.”

“Realistically, the situation appears very good therefore we must commence thinking again, more deeply about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, but also the whole way that we treat the natural world.”

Inspiring Change

Consequently, observers believe it was an opportune moment to honor her guiding principles. “I think that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – that was her priority, to change the way we treat wildlife with which we share the planet.”

A major topic currently was highlighted of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“We realised that factual reality is becoming a matter of debate when politics is involved. And it’s a perilous development,” he commented. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to allow interference by political agendas in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The hope remains that the medal will spur action. “The purpose is motivating others to get involved and to care and to strive in that direction, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we have to focus on doing the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, yet we must have to work toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection shared optimism that “given direction and once enabled, humanity are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, pointing to the programs of a foundation that, in addition to its projects, assists young people become engaged with their community, wildlife, and environment.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly emphasized, the choices we make each day are significant and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we make,” he said. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will offer support and increase understanding regarding constructive efforts that are being undertaken.”
