2K Recruits Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire message from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a sharper brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After some time of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Background of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but fans can expect further news as production advances.
